Hi Privateer,
I say give Vista a few good weeks of use. I really find XP clunky and slow by comparison and cannot live without the Start Search any more.

If you install XP and overwrite Vista then you won't be able to use the factory restore (repair) setting to revert to Vista + Works etc. You may be able to configure XP to dual-boot with Vista, but I'm not an expert in that field.

Whatever you decide. You can re-install Vista using the recovery CD, but that will not include Works, system drivers etc.
