I've copied this fron FAQ.
Q. How do I configure the TV-out in the Display Properties? A. When the computer is shut off, connect the TV alongside the Monitor to the appropriate connectors/interfaces on the graphic card. Turn the computer on and go into the "Display Properties" (> right click on desktop > properties > settings). Here you select "Advanced" and go into "Twin View". Choose "TV" in "Output Device" and then the TV standard deployed in your country, i.e. NTSC or PAL (you can choose the PAL standard according to the country you live in). Once you have rebooted your computer you should have a picture on your TV. To make sure that you have a picture on your TV though, it is smart to choose the "clone" option in the "Twin View" options. Once you can be sure to have a picture on the TV you can change the TV to be the only display device, if you want to do so. I recently asked about the pc to tv connection & i can now do that but not how i would like to. For example i only have 1 option in nvidia control panel which is,' only use single display'. Clone & dual view are not shown.I'm wondering why. Regarding the item i pasted above. This might be one for Mesh. If i right click on my desktop,'properties' is not shown in the menu, again i'm wondering why.Because it isn't shown i can't access the other options listed in the copied item above. I.E. Advanced, twin view, output device,tv standard etc. As it says it would be 'smart' to be certain that there is a picture on the tv before selecting single display,i'm not that up in computers but i'm presuming that if there wasn't a picture on the tv having opted for a single display, which is the only choice i have, that it would follow that there would not be a picture on the pc. So if i were to select single display, which is what i've been doing & i didn't get a tv picture & also lost the pc picture, how would i get things back on the pc. With the single display the options to return to the pc have to be made on the tv,so could i have problems if things go wrong because i don't have the clone option & why don't i have it. |

DJT OS is Vista.Geforce 8400GS card.I can enter the Nvidia control panel from the desktop but the clone & dualview options do not show in the options. As i said i can get the TV connection but i only have the single view option for some reason.I've reinstalled the drivers 3 or 4 times thinking maybe it might be linked. |

It wouldn't be a problem with the graphics card. If it was hardware related you would get problems such as no picture at all, constant crashing, slow graphics etc. The problem you are having is software related. My guess is that the signal from your tv isn't being picked up which is why you are not getting these options. This could be because you don't have the right type of connection selected or that your tv is incapable of providing that signal in which case all you are doing is sending the picture one way from the computer to the tv.
In the Nvidia control panel under the heading "Change the signal or HD format" do you have the tv and monitor showing? |

DJT I don't have a heading like that in the control panel. Before i read your most recent reply, for which i thank you.I went back 3 weeks & did a system restore at a date before i started trying to connect the tv. In the control panel if i select advance i now get the following. (1) choose the nview display mode to use. Only use 1 display (single). this is preselected. The same for both displays (clone) Configured independently from each other (dual view) I now have clone & dualview back, don't know why. (2) select the display you would like to use. My monitor is shown here. if i open the drop down,my tv is also shown. (3) select the display you want windows to use as primary. my monitor is shown here. all seems well up to here. Now if i return to (1) & select clone,my monitor & tv disappear from (2) & is replaced with 'my display is not shown in the list' i can also click on something similar which will attempt to find the missing displays but it doesn't find them. If i start again in (1) & select 'use 1 display (single) my monitor & tv are again available in (2) If i select tv in (2) Tv also appears automatically in (3) If i then click apply the pc display will go blank & should display on my tv.This what happened when i tried this. But i am then left with what may or may not be a problem. If i do this & the pc goes blank & the display for some reason doesn't appear on the tv,how do i reverse the proceedure if i can't access the pages. Which brings me back to the FAQ.about this where Mesh said, the 'smart'thing to do is to use the clone option. Although'clone' is now back it still doesn't work. I'm at a point now where i'm about to say enough is enough & give up on it. I'm wondering if this is possibly an issue in VISTA. |

TTL ="Transistor Transistor Logic". A digital signal that switches between 5V for logic '1' and (if I remember correctly) 1.7V for logic '0'
If you make sure you connect your cables to your TV (I seem to remember on my system that the audio also had to be connected) and switch the TV on, then start the Nvidia Control panel. You shoud see, under 'set up multiple displays' the three options: Use only one display (Single) The same on both displays (Clone) Configured independently from each other(Dualview) Once clicked on Clone, 'Select the displays you would like to use' should show both your Monitor + TV 'Select the display you want Windows to use as primary' should be set to your monitor. Click Apply and your monitor resolution will change and if you have your TV set to the correct input, the display should also appear there. You should get the option to keep this setting before it times out and returns to normal after about 30 seconds. Hope this helps

For the TTL explanation. I do get the things you list including the settings option to accept.i can do all that for single view. It all goes wrong when i select clone In nvidia control panel i get the 3 options when i select 'advanced'. Only single view in 'standard'. Single, Clone & dualview. Single view is preselected. Clone is available Dualview is available. In (2) i open the drop down & my tv is there with my monitor. In (3) my monitor is there as primary. While in single view,i can select tv from (2) & it will register there & tv will appear in (3) where monitor was showing as primary. If i click apply i have got the display on the tv & the pc has gone blank, which in single view i was expecting. It all goes wrong if i select clone. But if i start again & do as you suggest & i have done this many times,& select 'clone',my monitor & tv options disappear from (2) completely & they are replaced by 'display is not shown in the list' My monitor is still in (3) as primary. So,i have been able to transfer the pc to the tv but only in single view. The reason i'm not happy doing it this way is because i'm not that well versed in pc tech. matters & am concerned that i might be up the creek if i click apply & both pc & tv go blank. There appears to be a problem somewhere if i'm losing options when 'clone' is selected.I just don't know why or how to fix it. Incidentally i was only able to get the tv view with the S.Video cable. |

Hi CWL1,
Looking around I can find others with similar problems with that card under Vista including one who claims he has had it confirmed that the 8400 clone/dualview/tv-out options are limited, and under Vista, almost non-existent. Unfortunately I could not find anything specific from nVidia confirming this as the official situation. Most posts seem to imply that the posters were advised verbally. The limitations you are experiencing seem to eb the norm though, with the reason laying part on hardware limitations that would affect both XP and Vista, and partly on changes between XP and Vista with certain features that were present in XP having been removed from Vista.
