Default SMART problem

After a freeze up while operating the PC i tried to restart but got the following messages in sequence:
1: Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog: failure: Security options.
when i rebooted i got the following
2: PRI Master Hard disk: SMART status bad, backup abd replace: press f1 to resume.
3: A disk read error occurred: press c-a-d to restart.

eventually i got in by using the mesh recovery disk more by luck than design. i only used the repair function as i did not want to wipe my files. one problem had was that it asked to load the appropriate drivers but i had not a clue which ones were needed. i thought to use system restore but the only option i got was for a point 3 days before. i would have thought a lot more restore points would have been available as obviously whatever was causing the probelm must have happened before that period as the change made no difference.
when i got in again the same problem repeated.
anyone any clues?

You have your answer there. The hard drive has detected an error with it's self.

Personally, If I were you, I would try and back-up the files I needed, including C:/Drivers if you haven't already and have a new disk fitted.
