Unhappy Windows XP reinstall-SM bus controller & ehernet card not working

Hello,

I am newbee. Upon reinstalling my OS Windows XP Professional, the device manager is shwoing that both the SM bus controller and the ethernet card are not working properly. I have an AMD AThlon XP 2400+, 2GHz. Any help towards identifying the mother board/chipset and resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Appologies in advance if this has already been discussed

Cheers

El Tarico

There are several ways you can find out the motherboard fitted to your computer. The easiest is to remove your side panel and take a look. Make a note of the manufacturer and product description the go to the motherboard manufacturers website and download the full set of motherboard drivers.

You can also try the motherboard identification tools at motherboards.org Motherboards Identification Tools :: Motherboards.org Motherboards.org or CPU-z which is a very usefull utility that also gives information on your processor and memory CPUID.

CPU-z is the easiest of these as the motherboards.org tool requires you to input the BIOS string or part number. Both are fairly accurate but the only way to gaurantee you are getting the correct information is to physically check.

If you ensure you have your order/serial number in your profile one of the moderators will also be able to confirm the motherboard fitted and maybe also provide a link to the drivers.

EVEREST Ultimate will also tell you your motherboard and is also handy for keeping an eye on your temperatures and voltages.

Default XP reinstall: Ethernet card and SM bus, follow-up questions

Many thanks DJT298 and Eejit.
You were dead correct CPUID tool gave me the CPU info and the motherboard. I confirmed this by opening the and reading the MB number (did not atcually removed theheatsink to look at the chip). Specs are: Northbridge NVIDIA nForce rev. B2
Southbridge NVIDIA nForce MCP rev. C3. I looked at the nvidia website but couldn't locate the drivers. My PC serial number is {number removed}. Anythoughts on how I should find the drivers? Would the update of the drivers solve both the SM Bus controllers and the Ethernet card?

Many thanks

El Tarico

The Nvidia are the chipsets that are used, not the motherboard manufacturer.
It will most likely be an ASUS or ABIT motherboard. You need to find the manufacturer and the board model number to download the drivers.
Everest Ultimate shows my motherboard to be an ABIT IN9 32-MAX. This is spot on, so I go to Abit's website and download drivers for the IN9 32-MAX.

Hi El Tarico,

Your motherboard (if still as originally fitted) is the ASUS A7N266-VM and drivers can be found here.

It looks like you need the driver from under the LAN and OTHER sections to cover the two items you mention.

Hi El Tarico

Davey has provided you with the info you need but for future reference the motherboard make can be found in CPUID under the Mainboard tab - manufacturer and the model number again under the Mainboard tab - Model.
