Default What is the crunchy noise?

I am on my second Mesh computer now, I have always wondered why the hard drives always sound crunchy. I don't know how else to describe the noise!

I have never heard any other computers doing it apart from Mesh computers. My dad and a lot of my friends have Mesh computers and they are the same. I know it is not a problem, just always wondered why it does it.

It sounds like the read/write accuator to me.

I think I know the type of noise you are talking about and would guess that it's just a characteristic of that particular make/model of hard drive.

I hear it too, I reported the problem, they said the HD would need replacing, but I have a 500Gb single HD in my system, so I received a call and a firm engineer said return the old HD and we'll send a new one.

I pointed out that all my files are stored on the HD so I would need to transfer them onto the new one first, answer :

"Backing up of data is a user's responsibility, could you transfer the data onto a backup drive before returning the problem HD?"

"Not really, I don't have a 500Gb external drive, and I'm not willing to go out and buy one because of a problem with your HD as sold (upwards of £120)"

"All we can offer is to "sell" you the replacement drive in order for you to transfer the data across before sending the defective drive back to us"

"How much will that be?"

...... I'm still waiting for the answer, 3 months later. Needless to say I'm still hearing the crunching noises occasionally.

Pathetic customer service from MESH !!!

Now I have a problem playing Blu-ray films on my PC, which I bought with a BD Drive !!!

Not impressed at all

To put it in perspective, if you have you iPod repaired it doesn't have the music on it when it's returned, if you have your Sky+, V+ or Freeview+ box repaired it doesn't have the TV programs on it etc...

Hi D Rhodes,

The data issue is an old one that crops up on a regular basis, and it's always somehow our fault....

My observation is that is no-one considers a data backup until it is too late and the data is gone. And again the lack of a backup is never their fault.

Hardware WILL fail. Someday. No-one knows when exactly but we do know it cannot be avoided.

If it's important, back it up now please. And recognise that the only person responsible for your data is you.

Davey

p.s. very good comparison chickendippers.

I know the noise I hear is not a problem. It happens to both my Mesh computers, my dads and a lot of my friends who also have Mesh computers.

Regarding backups.. your a fool if you don't! you only have yourself to blaim.

I suggest getting a second internal or an external drive and backup daily, or even hourly (how valuable is your data?). It is actually very easy and is not time consuming with the right software. I use GoodSync which syncs all of my data with a click of a button. It is very quick, easy to use and very cheap.
