Default Slow to eject device connected via USB

When I connect a flash memory stick or an external hard drive via a USB connection, it takes a very long time to eject using the 'safely remove hardware' icon inthe bottom right tray. It is not the devices as these eject normally on other computers using the same procedure.

Why is this process so slow on my computer?

Thanks

That's my initial theory out the window lol. I thought you may have one on XP and one on Vista and the Vista appears to take longer.

Normally the reason it can take a long time to provide the safely remove notice is because the USB device is still being accessed. When the device is inserted, right click the remove icon and select safely remove hardware option. When the main window opens highlight the problem device and click properties. In the new window that opens click on policies then ensure the checkbox is selected "Optimize for quick removal".

Looked at this and it is already 'optimised for quick removal'.
