Default Overclocking

I have read that the AMD Phenom II 940 can easily be overcolcked from 3 to 3.6. I would like to give this a go. Can I stick with the standard fan or should I use one of those big copper jobs

I would go with those big copper jobs.

Something like the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 or Thermalright True Black 120, should do the job nicely. There also others, so if you have another one in mind post it up and we'll check out the reviews for it.

Bare in mind that by overclocking you will be invalidating the warranty should anything go wrong with your computer. As you will need to raise the fsb to overclock you potentially risk damaging the processor, motherboard and memory.

I'm not against overclocking and have done quite a bit in the past myself, but you need to be aware of the dangers. To be honest, with the processsor you're buying the only benefit you will get at the moment from overclocking is bragging rights and a few more points in 3D Mark Vantage or other benchmarking tool. Under normal circumstances there is little you will do that will push that processor and based on the specs you have posted in your other thread the processor will be held back by the graphics card anyway.

Red face

mmm 2 very valid points

Perhaps I could request the mesh upgrade ocz vendetta heat pipe and let it sit untill I need to squeeze a few extra hz out of the system

I remember the day when the 1.67 ghz this sempron 2400+ represented a serious gaming machine

You have a black edition processor, so its very easy to overclock. You just have to increase the multiplier slightly. However afaik it will still invalidate your warranty, and even at 3.0ghz the phenom II 940 is a very fast processor so unless you are benchmarking you wont see any real difference.
