Default Cooling Solutions

Okay so my new Psu and Graphics card are running like a dream, next thing on my upgrade list, a quieter processor fan!

Any suggestions of what i could get? Saw this one on ebay which looks pretty nice

It all depends on how much you want to spend. Commonly recognised as the best air cooler is the Thermalright Ultra 120 (TRUE) closely followed by the Noctua NH-U12P both of which are really excellent coolers but expensive costing close on £50. For more realistic money one of the best is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro which can be bought for a little over £15. I have one of these coolers on my quad core cpu and it has been really good.

The Freezer comes with quite decent paste already applied and uses the standard intel push pin connection so fitting is straight forward and doesn't require the removal of the motherboard whereas both the TRUE and Noctua need the motherboard removed as you are required to fit a backing plate underneath. If you choose the TRUE, you will also need to factor into the price a 120mm fan which is not supplied and also a good quality thermal paste.

Make sure when changing the coolers you remove all traces of existing paste from the back of the processor and clean with an alcohol based solution.

I would advise against buying items like these from ebay and instead use a recognised online etailer such as ebuyer as you have much better after sales support and can be assured of the quality of the product you are buying. In my experience, items like these cost pretty much the same on ebay anyway.

To be honest I think a lot more is made of the Intel push pin setup than is necessary. Granted it is not as secure as bolting through the motherboard but then it is a lot easier. As long as you are careful and ensure that all the pins are fully inserted into the motherboard (you will hear/feel a click but may need to exert some force) you will be fine.

Default cooling

Hi Ondra - fitted Arctic 7 Pro a few weeks ago - relative novice and first time had taken back off PC! See thread in Mod your Mesh title Noisy Fans for details.

What a difference a £15 fan has made - also check to make sure the extra leads from the fans are connected to the control slots on the mob.

Regards

Brook
