Default Silence the noise!

Hi,

My new Mesh PC is very very noisy! I bought this one MESH Computers - Award Winning Review PCs Since 1987 - Elite Pro Geforce and was hoping i'd be able to send it back to Mesh and have them effectively upgrade it in order to silence it.

Pretty stupidly though I tried to change the fan myself (first time) and i've not done a great job and gave up - in truth I wish it was easier to send back to Mesh and have them upgrade but the online support didn't seem to help just told me I could buy a new case, considering the bodge job i've done in attempting to change the fan god knows the mess i'd get in trying to put everything into a new case. I am sure i've lost my warranty but that's life.

What I would like to be able to do is send it back to Mesh and get this new case for it Mesh Computers Owners Club Shop - NZXT HU001 HUSH Silent Brushed Aluminium ATX Midi Tower - Black - NO PSU Details and also some quieter fans. Does anyone know if this is a possibilty? If not does anyone know of any trustworthy places in London or Cambridge who would do this job?

Cheers

Yeah i know exactly what you mean! The Problem is the PSU fan not any of the case cooling fans i assume?

I bought a silent Power supply for my pc, i also see you have an asus motherboard, you can change the fan settings using asus probe which can be downloaded from their website.

Hope this helps

Default Tips

I found the same problem with the Mesh PC I bought in 2004. Surprised upgrades to make the PC quieter are not more available as many people listen to music and watch TV on the PC and may have it in the bedroom. It can be irritating if it sounds like a fan heater.

I added a Scythe Ninja heatsink to the processor with a slower, larger fan, and in fact the most difference was in adding an Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 heatsink to the graphics card which had a very small, noisy fan.

I'm sure a local PC shop would do it if Mesh won't. Take a look at quietpc.com.

I don't know of any in your area but there seems to be a renaissance in the high street PC repair shop since the Crunch. If you can't get a recommendation, go for a long established store, and I'd avoid the big names.
A quick fix for the noise a PC makes can be found in the BIOS. Before doing anything, install a good temperature monitor like Everest Ultimate (trial) of SpeedFan (free.) Note the temperatures before making changes.
For ASUS boards, look for the fan speed settings. They are probably set to duty cycle, 100%. I find setting the fans to Q-Fan with a target temperature of 40C works for me. Setting the fans to duty cycle and reducing the percentage works too but it limits the fans and they can't run at full speed if needed. Make sure all thermal protection features are turned on.
With Q-Fan active, the fans will speed up when needed. Keep an eye on your system temperatures and see where they go with your PC working hard.
You can do this with software such as nVidea's nTune and Speed Disk but I don't find them reliable.
Incidentally, my CPU fan makes most of the noise in my PC. The PSU is relatively quiet. The above made my computer tolerable in my bedroom/office. The hard drives make most of the noise now though the fans return to their previous volume when the computer is pushed.

Thanks for all the responses, i'm going to try and send it back to Mesh to see if they can sort it, just waiting for them to send out the returns label.

Will let you know if they manage to quieting things down a notch or two.. hopefully!

Default Silence the noise!

I too have a noisy fan on my on my Nero 9850HD in a Midi-Tower ATX chassis, when switched on there is a "tick-over" noise from the fan, BUT within 5 seconds it jumps up to "peak revs" making a annoying din. My question is - doesn't the fan work of the temperature of the inside of the case? working off a thermostat, so therefore not much heat has been generated within 5 seconds, so why does the fan increase in speed? Is this normal?

I only received my MESH P.C. last week, and have got fed up waiting for the 'phone to be answered by the Technical Dept., so I would be very grateful of any advice.

Hi ,

I am having the same problem. My Nero 9850HD ordered with an NZXT Hush case and AMD Phenom II X4 920 processor arrived yesterday. I was disappointed with how loud it was. Checked the forums and enable Q-Fans and installed the provided PC Probe to see the CPU temp and fan speed. Basically I am not going to get away with this because the PC is in our living room. I am hoping to get a recommendation for a different fan or heat sink and fan from the hardware mods forum. I took the side panel of the case off and the noise is mostly coming from the CPU. The case itself does not appear to have cut out much sound.

Angry Silence the noise

I originally posted on 10/06/09 about the loud CPU fan on my Nero HD9850HD
I have only just got around to 'phoning MESH Technical Department for help in quietening the fan. I was talked through the procedure of the BIOS set-up utility to the setting of the Smart-Fan function, which was not enabled, this was then "enabled" and the CPU fan speed dropped immediately to 3650 rpm, a drop of, I believe, of 1000rpm, a big drop in the noise level, although I would like it lower. My question is why was the Smart-Fan not enabled when the P.C. was at MESH before it despatched to me?
Another thing that niggled me is that when I ordered my Nero9850HD I ordered extra RAM, to a total of 8MB, on a 32-bit O.S. which was an extra £50 Why didn't someone in the Sales Dept. tell me that only 3.5MB of RAM would be recognised on 32-bit O.S.? Just to get an extra 50 quid from me?
This is my second MESH P.C. I am sure their attitude to their customers will certainly have to change for me to buy another one in a couple of years time.

Mesh ship all their pc's with the bios set at default and making adjustments of the type you mention is covered in the motherboard manufacturers manual.

As for the 32bit operating system, it is fairly common knowledge about the restrictions applied by the 32bit setup. For all Mesh knew you could have been looking to upgrade to 64bit at a later date. What have they done wrong? they have supplied you with exactly what you requested.

Default Silence the noise

Hello DJT 298,
You state in reply to my posting concerning a noisy fan that the BIOS is set at default as covered in the motherboard manufacturers manual, surely you cannot mean the 100 page Asus book filled with technical data and instructions that "CONTAINS THE INFORMATION YOU NEED WHEN INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING THE MOTHERBOARD" (page viii) Why on earth would I or anybody else who has just purchased a shiny new P.C. want to read that? All they want to do is unpack - set up - and push a button.
This book would only be read by a person knowledgeable enough to build their own P.C. or a MESH staff member who would have read on page 2-35 that the "Smart Q-Fan feature that ajusts the speed for more a efficient system operation" that paragraph would certainly not read by all the people who posted requests for advice on noisy fans, especially those members who replaced theirs!
I still believe that the adjustments should have been made during the production process, don't MESH want their P.C.'s to leave Cricklewood with an "Efficient system operation"?

I refute your statement that it is common knowledge concerning the 32bit system restrictions, out of 3017 members of the club I should think are many who are ignorant of this, and would also would not want to touch the BIOS settings and why would I purchase a 32bit system to go to a 64bit system later?
A 'phone call or an Email from MESH to inform me that 8gb RAM would not work on the system I was purchasing would have only taken a couple of minutes, instead of taking my £50 - it is what I would call a bit of old fashioned "Customer Service"
