On the subject of GPUs

I've got an old system currently using a RAD X800

So an upgrade is loooong overdue methinks.

I've been recommended to try a HD4670 which is in my price range

I just want to know if I'll have any problems with this and my cpu
a AMD Athelon 64 4000+

Or is it just a matter of slotting the new card into the PCI and loading drivers and away we go?

You shouldn't have any problems with that card and will notice quite an improvement from the X800. It is probably quite a good choice of upgrade as too powerfull card will be held back by the processor.
