Default 4 issues - startup, internet slow, e-mail attachments & wireless connection drops

Hello,

Can anyone help before I go mad please.

Problem 1) Probably 30-40% of the time I turn my pc on (which is only about 3 months old) windows doesn't load - I just get a white flashing "underscore" in the top left hand corner of the black screen. I have to re-start and sometimes it works, sometimes I have to do it 3-4 times.

Problem 2) Around the time my Bullguard free trial expired (which may be a coincidence) about 2 weeks ago, the internet has gone really slow. I use IE, Firefox, Chrome and Opera and they are all the same. However, there is nothing wrong with the connection itself as all speed tests are fine, as are any downloads I do. My e-mails come through quickly, even the large ones. The browser just takes ages to open any page but this used to be extremely fast, especially with Chrome and Firefox. You can see it saying every step, eg looking up xx, connecting to xx, waiting for xx, loading xx, etc etc.

Problem 3) My e-mails (using windows mail) have been fine until about 4-5 weeks ago and now quite often it does absolutely nothing when you click on an attachment. All programs are associated properly and the only way I can get it to work is to right click on the icon and "run as administrator" which is a real pain as I have it set to run on startup.

Problem 4) My wireless connection keeps dropping despite me buying a brand new router. The wireless strength is fine but I have to keep clicking the double screen icon and reconnecting - particularly after the pc has gone on to screensaver / power saving.

Thanks in advance for any help at all!!

Hi BoroBlue,

Do you have any additional devices connected to the PC other than those supplied with it?

Do you still have Bullguard installed?

Are all these issues ones that have only recently started?

Davey

3) I can never open attachments via windows mail by clicking the attachment.
I have to save it and then open it from saved location.
I have no idea why it does this, Ive just got used to it.

4) there will be a settings under control panel/system maintance/power options
click change settings under balanced
then change advanced settings
under wireless adapter settings
change to maxium performance.

this might help that.
otherwise it'll be turning itself off to save power, and you need to change this under
right click computer - manage
device manager
click network adapters, right click wireless adapter - properties
go to the last tab power management and uncheck the box/es

Hi Davey,

I only have a printer and speakers connected but they have been there since I got the pc and all worked ok before. Obviously I have a wireless adapter too.

I have uninstalled bullguard completely which didn't change things so I installed AVG and Spybot just to see if anything had infected me since bullguard expired. Still no change.

Problem 4 has been a bit of an issue since I first got the pc
Problem 3 started about 8 weeks ago (around the same time I upgraded to IE8 - again that may be coincidence)
Problem 1 started about 5-6 weeks ago
Bullguard expired about 2 weeks ago
Problem 2 started about 2 weeks ago

3. Is it "the command failed to execute" if so to correct goto
windows mail
tools
options
security
2nd box must be blank(do not allow attachments etc etc)

trouble is everytime it automatically updates it tends to retick this box

info on some other settings you can try http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.mai l&cat=en_US_9CA88DDB-D18D-FA0E-A366-6E527B0FBA67&lang=en&cr=US&query="The%20command%20 failed%20to%20execute."

Hi BoroBlue,

There are some USB devices that register as storage medium which causes the PC to think it's to be considered as bootable media. This can cause problems along the line you mention so you can try disconnecting anything that might be considered in this way. Even a printer with a built in card reader can suffer this problem.

If the hardware has not changed but the problem appeared recently then the likelihood is hardware failing or failure. Essentially we'd need to take a look at the system.

The 2nd and 3rd issue sound more like software configuration with the 4th one of a number of potential causes from software to hardware failure.

Thanks very much all.

MidnightDraven - I have tried your suggestions but no joy I'm afraid.

Chickendippers - it's a USB connection.

John50 - no I don't get that message - it either just doesn't do anything at all or it says there is no program associated with this file type (which there definitely is - I've checked about 10 times!). I have to save it to desktop and open it from there.

Davey - thanks - I will see if I get any more suggestions on here then I will try messing about and uninstalling and re-installing stuff to see if I can get anywhere.
